What is Semen Freezing?
Semen freezing, also known as sperm cryopreservation, is a method of preserving a man's sperm for future use.
The process involves collecting a semen sample and freezing it at very low temperatures, typically -196°C, in a special solution. When the sperm is needed, it can be thawed and used for assisted reproductive techniques such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI).
When is Semen Freezing needed?
There are several medical reasons that may necessitate semen freezing, as discussed below.
Fertility Preservation
Men undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy should freeze their sperm to preserve fertility. Preserving semen before cancer treatment can boost a man's fertility.
Prior Vasectomy or Infertility Treatment
Men considering vasectomy or infertility treatments like IVF or ICSI may freeze their semen. This guarantees sperm for these procedures if the ejaculate has low or no sperm.
Occupational and Environmental Hazards
Men who work in hazardous or high-risk environments, such as exposure to chemicals, radiation, or extreme heat, may choose to freeze their semen as a precautionary measure to preserve fertility.
Military Deployment or Travel
Men who are serving in the military or who travel frequently may choose to freeze their semen to ensure availability of sperm for future conception.
Sperm allergy
Semen freezing is also necessary for men who wish to become sperm donors for fertility centers or individuals who are seeking donor sperm for conception.
How does it work?
The Process at the best Semen Freezing center in KPHB Colony, Hyderabad
Semen collection
The man masturbates into a sterile container to provide a semen sample. If the man cannot produce a semen sample through masturbation, electroejaculation may be used.
Semen analysis
Quality and quantity of semen are analysed, to determine the best freezing method, sperm number, shape, and motility
Addition of cryoprotectant
A special solution called a cryoprotectant is added to the semen sample. The cryoprotectant helps protect the sperm from damage during the freezing and thawing process.
Freezing
A controlled rate freezer slowly freezes the semen sample to -196°C. After freezing, the semen is stored in a cryovial in a liquid nitrogen tank.
Thawing
When the sperm is needed for fertilization, it is thawed in a controlled manner. The cryovial is removed from the liquid nitrogen tank and placed in a warm water bath. Once thawed, the sperm can be used for assisted reproductive techniques such as IVF or IUI.
Semen freezing is an option for men who can't produce a semen sample or are undergoing fertility-damaging medical treatments.
